In her book, Frugal Families, homeschooling mom and former corporate manager, Jonni McCoy shares her wisdom on how to prosper when one parent stays at home. Her common sense approach overviews basic ways to make an impact on some of the largest obstacles in a family's financial stability.

In the early chapters of the book, Mrs. McCoy emphasizes the importance of putting family first while pinching pennies. She discusses the "bottom line" really generated by a second family income when the added expenses of child care, business clothing, commuting, and convenience food are taken into account, and she highlights the emotional toll involved in making the decision to have a spouse at home. After a chapter on moving work to home (but continuing to work), the author continues her support of strengthening the family unit with a huge list of fun things to do inexpensively, suggestions for frugal holidays, and ways to enjoy a vacation on a budget. Home decorating, purchasing of appliances, and pet care issues are other home-related topics that are addressed.

A large portion of the book is devoted to addressing "big ticket" financial issues. Mrs. McCoy offers specifics on managing money -- making a budget, reducing debt, creating a savings plan. The largest section provides information on the myriad of insurance programs that a family could need. Life, health, disability, dental, and auto insurance are included, along with a discussion of negotiating with doctors, using over the counter medicines when possible, and practicing standard dental care to further reduce expenses. Recommendations surrounding car purchasing and maintenance round out the chapters about major financial issues.

Mrs. McCoy concludes the book with information about consumer rights and how to complain to companies and agencies.

Recommendation: Frugal Families has great basic information to get a families on track to be good stewards of their finances. Between the suggestions provided and the many references cited in the book, parents can plan ways to live on less, save more, and reduce debt. Frugal Families is a solid starting point for families who are looking to improve their financial position, a thorough review for those who are already financially aware, and a viable text to use as part of a high school curricula to prepare homeschooled children for adult life.
