Homeschooling mother and author Christy Wade was inspired to write Becoming Whole after healing herself through healthful eating. Mrs. Wade points out that while Christians do much to separate themselves from worldly ways, their eating habits follow those of of the world. Americans have some of the highest mortality rates in the world for heart disease and cancer, for example, and Christian Americans die at the same rate as non-Christians. Obesity is another overwhelming problem in the U.S. The author's call to action is a return to eating according to Biblical principles.

Using extensive Scripture references, Mrs. Wade reintroduces the way God intended men to eat -- primarily as vegetarians. She draws from books written by George Malkmus, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and Dr. John McDougall, among others, to share the "price" of eating the American way, disease and death, but throughout Becoming Whole, the author offers hope, encouragement, and ideas for those wishing to lose weight and those looking to improve how they feel. Chapters include information, applicable Bible verses, and prayer along with thought-provoking study questions for discussion. The book ends with tips for getting the entire family (including husbands!) involved in healthier living.

Recommendation: As Becoming Whole combines Bible study with improving health, it will make an outstanding book for small group discussion and devotion. The ideas presented are not new to those familiar with the authors mentioned above, but the workbook format will be appealing to readers who prefer a study approach to just reading. Mrs. Wade's positive outlook and enthusiasm make Becoming Whole an enjoyable book.
