Stephen Beck offers a challenge to all Christian fathers in his book, A Father's Stew. Citing Biblical truths, he persuades the reader that a different focus, living purposefully through integration of family, work, and ministry, is needed for Christians in today's world. Many people interpret Scripture to suit themselves, selectively obey it, or worse yet, ignore it altogether.

The "great neglected priority" in family life is "our responsibility." Fathers are meant to be the head of the family, and as such, must take responsibility for the discipline of their children. Discounting all excuses, Mr. Beck shows how important it is to have discipline and devotion to the Lord at home before turning to ministry to others. Making "disciple-makers," those who will spread the Word, begins at home with your own children, and Mr. Beck strongly supports homeschooling to attain this goal.

Mr. Beck uses examples from his own experiences and those of Solomon to illustrate his point that work affects all aspects of life. Work exists to glorify God and His priorities must be considered above all. The author suggests that fathers explore this topic prayerfully and be open to unconventional solutions or possibly, just to an attitude adjustment.

In the final section of the book, the author contrasts today's churches to Paul's standards and discusses many short fallings. Bringing Christians to spiritual maturity to become "disciple-makers" should be the primary goal of ministry, and Mr. Beck offers recommendations and further reading to support this. The book ends with a discussion of discipling men.

Recommendation: Stephen Beck has written a thought-provoking book that is sure to challenge Christian men and men who are considering becoming Christians. Christian wives will find inspiration and food-for-thought in A Father's Stew, and could use the book as a springboard for discussion with Christian and non-Christian husbands who need a fresh look at priorities. A Father's Stew will make an excellent book for Christian couples to combine with Bible study or devotions.
