In Parenting the Heart of Your Child, Diane Moore adapts psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of "six stages of moral development" to a Christian perspective. She uses Scripture and examples from her experience to discuss the "secret path the heart takes to maturity."

In level one, "It's all about me," the individual is motivated by fear of punishments or by the anticipation of a reward. The next level, "It's all about us," is the time when people look to be accepted and to be "normal," agreeing with the majority. In the highest level, "It's bigger than us," one is motivated to do the right thing because it is righteous, and to "express ultimate love and truth" in a Christ-like way.

A summary at the end of the chapter recaps the important points and action steps. The book concludes with a brief study guide by chapter.

Recommendation: Parenting the Heart of Your Child offers a unique point-of-view of how to train up children. The stages are sensible, and every parent will see where her children fit. While there are some suggestions to help parents identify the stages, more ideas as to how to cope with issues in each stage would be helpful. Still, understanding the process is the beginning of finding solutions, and Parenting the Heart of Your Child is a good starting point.
