Subject: BJU Physical World Science or Apologia Physical Science

I'm trying to decide between these for my dd for 8th grade next year. Can anyone compare the two for me? She did not like Apologia General Science but the physical science appears to cover some things we need to do before high school. We have not used any BJU books but I also like the looks of it.

Also, I have found that there is a DIVE CD to go with the BJU science. Has anyone seen or used this?

Thanks so much. This is my first posting on these boards but I have read them often and gained a lot of valuable info.

but with my 7th grade dd we started the year with Apologia's General Science.  After about 5 weeks she grew very weary with it.  We ended up switching to Bob Jones Life Science (7th grade science) and she has really enjoyed it.  Has she learned more with it?  I'm not sure, but I believe so just because she enjoys it.  Of course, this is the child who loves animals (thus the decision to do Life Science) and that may have something to do with it too.  My other girls (I have 3 others, 2 of which did Apologia General Science) didn't do General Science until 8th grade, and they had problems with the tests.  I'm not real hot on tests, so until then we hadn't done tests much, which could have been the problem.  I think Apologia is advanced, but that is my opinion.  If I didn't already have an investment in Apologia I would probably use Bob Jones.  I have no experience with the DIVE cds.

I would have to agree with Jan. Apologia did not work out for us either. That's not to say it wouldn't for others though. ;-)
We used BJU and Abeka through high school with a little work on the side from other books like DK and Usborne. None of my kids enjoyed science unless it was hands-on. Apologia did have some interesting experiments but it wasn't worth the trudging through the book itself.
Apologia does offer alternate tests but those are through email and they are free.

I can't say anything about the Apologia General Science based on my own personal experience, as we did that through A Beka. We now are Apologia all the way, starting with their Biology course this year. We will do their Chemistry course next year. However, the reason I am adding my two cents worth is because I have a dear friend who has always done Apologia, but when they hit the General Science book, she said it was just awful.....she wasn't enjoying it and the kids definitely weren't. However, they trudged through it and know that the Physical Science text is not at all like that one. Apparently, in their series of books, the General Science is the only one that is drudgery! I do know that my dd really likes the Biology book. She says it is easy to read and she understands it. I really like that the books are written "to the children" so that they can study independently as they get older.

I don't know if this helps at all, especially since I have never done any BJU stuff, but I know that when I am researching different curriculums, every little tidbit is helpful!

Good luck to you.

Hi, Lisa--

My two older children used Apologia's Physical Science in 8th grade. In 8th grade, my youngest used a mix of Apologia's Physical Science, A Beka's 8th grade science, and BJUP's Physical World--and I probably threw something else into the mix, too, that I'm forgetting at the moment.

BJUP's Physical World, which is their 9th grade text, is essentially introductory chemistry and introductory physics. Apologia's Physical Science is about half introductory physics and half earth science, with a tiny bit of introductory chemistry. To get earth science from BJUP, you'd have to use their current 8th grade book, not Physical World.

Therefore, one of the big differences between the two texts you're asking about (Apologia's 8th grade Physical Science and BJUP's 9th grade Physical World) is content.

BJUP's coverage tends to be more indepth than Apologia's (if I'm remembering correctly), but Apologia tends to be more self-explanatory. I tend to prefer BJUP's labs compared to Apologia's in general, but I have a science background.

I'm afraid I don't have any experience with the DIVE disks.

HTH!

Still haven't made a decision but it helps to hear the perspective of others. I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't care for Apologia's GS. I'm glad to hear their later books are better - I've heard such great things about Apologia overall.

The content is definately important. I guess I have been leaning towards Apologia Physical because of the Earth Science portion. That's probably what we've done the least of. We did Apologia this year for the 1st semester and Christian Kids Explore Chemistry this semester. But BJU still sounds great............ I'll be going to convention in June, so I'll take a good look at both then.

Thanks again!

Well, we grew to LOVE Apologia. I used BJU in my own high school and it was o.k. However, one thing that I feel I need to pass on about Apologia is the fact that it is VERY philisophical in it's approach. So, if your child has not developed analytical thinking skills (and MANY 7th and 8th graders have not) then many times, Apologia seems to shoot right over their head.

I don't think you can rush that development and I don't think it is a good idea to try and start out 7th and 8th graders with Apologia as an "indenpendent" type of course. They will need some guidance for quite a while and then they will round a curve and be able to work through it more without much coaching or side by side guidance.

Blessings,
Trishy
