Hi, I can't believe I am planning on homeschooling again starting next week. I homeschooled my two boys from the begininning up until my youngest was in 3rd grade. When I homeschooled back then I was married and was blessed to have that financial and emotionial support. There are several reasons as to why I could not continue homeschooling at that time which I won't go into right now. My husband and I have been separated for about two years now. My youngest son for the past three years and has really struggled in school and does't fully "fit in". The subject of homeschooling has come up a couple of times in the past two years but my schedual then would not really allow it. My youngest son (now in 7th grade) would love to be homeschooled again and my current hours at work will allow me to now. It will be hard though I'm sure. I work full time from 2 am till 10:30 am, which works out ok if I go to bed by 6 or 7 pm. With me getting home before 11 am, I will have the rest of the day to homeschool. Does this sound crazy? Perhaps I need encouragement.....ok, I need encouragement, its been awhile. I am glad to know there are other single parents out there homeschooling as well.

Welcome! Glad you found us. Yes, there are other single homeschooling parents out there. :0) I'm widowed mom of 4 (one graduated) and have been homeschooling solo for 6 years now. It's challenging, but it can be done. How will you handle someone watching your kids while you are working? Is your older one old enough to be "responsible" for his brother during the night? If so, you have it made.

You are NOT crazy. Your son will be blessed by homeschooling again. :0) Please tell us more so we can encourage you!

Thanks for your prompt reply. I moved back to AZ a few months ago to help my mother. At the last minute my oldest son (15 yrs.) decided to stay in WA with his dad, church friends, ect. which made it a hard move to make but I fully understand why he chose to do so. My younger son has adjusted really well (except for public school). Being that my mother and I are sharing a home right now, my son will not be alone while I am at work. Also my mother works a different shift than I do and leaves for work soon after I come home.

Awesome! That's perfect that you and your mom work different shifts. You are good to go! Have you decided on a curriculum? (Click on the Christianbook box ^ up there for a huge selection of options.) You can definitely do this!! Also, look here for Arizona homeschooling laws:

Hi again! Yes I have decided on curiculum. When I homeschooled before it took me about 5 years and several different types of math curriculum to discover Saxon Math is my preferance. I still have a Saxon 7/6 book that I think will be perfect for my younger son. It will allow me to back up just a bit with him and fill in some gaps which he needs. I also plan to get Easy Grammar which I have used in the past and really like. For science and history I have a couple of Abeka books I could use ulness I find something else that I like better, any suggestions? Thank you for the web sites you sent me. It feels so good to comunicate with someone about this. I havn't yet found a co-op group in this area, that is on my to do list for this week! I am getting excited, I so enjoyed homeschooling in the past and have often missed it.

Well, I'm crazy about Rod and Staff for English. It's very rigorous, explains things well, and gives a solid foundation. For history I'd suggest using "living" books or primary source documents to study whatever timeframe he's interested in. I'm teaching a class called "Early American History: Foundations of Freedom" for homeschooled teens this semester, and we have studied Common Sense, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Federalist Papers plus lots more. I've found it very interesting and the teens have been exposed to documents that most college students don't read today. So, my point is branch out and do what will interest your son!

What exactly are living books? I know I've heard that term before, but I honestly am not sure what are considered living books.

hello and welcome to HSC!

I'm also a single mom (my dh died 3 years ago).

I have 3 dc that are now teens. I have one 8th grade dd and twin 9th grade ds's. We have home schooled from the beginning. It can be done!

I agree with Martha about making sure you have someone to be there for your 7th grader at night while you work. Other than that, there is no reason you can't homeschool. It sounds like your ds is eager to come back home for schooling, so I'm sure you both will make is a great success.

So glad that you will be able to have a safe and workable plan for your son. It is exciting to see that he is wanting this and it is going to be great I'm sure. Welcome.
