I read on a website that a good place to find 2nd hand, free, 5 gallon buckets, is at the Walmart bakery.
I haven't had any luck finding a local source, so I called the nearest Walmart bakery, and they did indeed say that they give/throw them away.  So I'll try to make a trip down there soon.  I really hate to pay $7 or $8 dollars for one, plus the mylar bag, plus the O2 absorber, and you end up at $10+ bucks before you even get your food.  I don't mind buying a good lid if I can get the bucket for free.....but maybe I'll luck out and they'll have the lid too!

Have you found any locally?

Used to give them away for free. They'd be dirty, if you didn't mind cleaning them, they were yours for the taking. I should check to see if they're still doing that.

What kind of lid are you going to go with? The Gamma Lid? Just curious.

The lids from the bakery used to be screw on, but now they are the kind you cut and I don't think they're airtight.

Do you freeze your dried goods so any potential weavils get frozen and can't grow?
Just curious.

Yet!  I've bought some already "bucketed". But I'd like to store my own rice and beans since I use so much of them anyway; I'd like to keep them as fresh as possible.

Ideally, I would like the Gamma Lids, but would settle for anything with a rubber seal, to save on cost.

If I have room in my freezer, yes, I will throw a bag of rice in their for 5 days before freezing.
But if I don't, I'm not going to worry about it.

I get 3 gallon square buckets with a tight fitting lid from my veterinarian. I have gotten 5 gallon buckets from local bakeries.
You may want to ask at your local landfill if there are companies that toss such things. Companies would MUCH RATHER give things away than pay for a load to go to the landfill. So, you might be able to get them BEFORE they get to the landfill.

I asked our Wal and they said they no longer give them away, they recycle them.

I was able to get 5 buckets from our local Walmart.
I also checked at Sams and the girls said to call ahead and they will save them for me.....but at the moment the bakery is under construction.

Thanks for the info, everybody.

It drives my wife nuts, but I save old buckets not only for storage but also to maximize my garden's growing space by hanging them and growing vegetables a la the "Topsy Turvey" planters.

I'll have to give the Wal Mart a try.
