After the artist Noyes Capehart finished a set of woodcuts illustrating the Stations of the Cross, the commemoration of Christ's walk to Calvary, the idea for Walking the Way of Sorrows was conceived. In this book, author Katerina Katsarka Whitley uses the woodcuts as inspiration for her stories.

Fourteen people who interacted with Christ from His condemnation to His crucifixion "speak" about Him in the chapters of Walking the Way of Sorrows. he individuals include Romans who guard Christ and crucify him, Judas Iscariot who is plagued by guilt, and a woman who showed Christ kindness though it was forbidden. Every one of the people, no matter how hardened, is moved in some way by our Lord. Each section begins with a relevant Scripture selection, followed by the narrative, and ending with a prayer.

The first Roman who observes Christ's condemnation uses an offensive word to describe the Roman rulers. It was surely added for effect to give one the idea of how coarse the Roman soldier was and how he felt about those above him, but it can easily be worked around if it is an issue for your family.

Recommendation: This book will move you. From the moment you pick it up, you are grabbed and transported back in time. Walking the Way of Sorrows helps you to experience Christ's final hours from the point-of-view of average people of the time. It will make an outstanding Lenten devotional or Bible study for teens and adults, and offer a springboard to deeper conversations with new believers and non-believers. If you read a chapter and close your eyes to let your imagination go, you will see Christ's walk and truly be inspired!
