Dr. Kevin Leman guarantees that you will have a better-behaved child within five days of starting his program; however, he is clear to say that there is a catch! Parents must be willing to follow his advice even when it makes them uncomfortable and is out of character for them. They cannot give up or give in.
With examples from his personal life and the lives of people he has helped, Dr. Leman illustrates his simple principles. By implementing these, parents have disarmed power struggles and made their children into happier participants in family life. The child's or teen's attitude, behavior, and character are dramatically improved.
The book has an introduction and five chapters (Monday through Friday) to explain what needs to be done. Parents should read these to prepare for the beginning of the new parent/child interaction that starts on Friday. Dr. Leman summarizes with ten straightforward rules to follow so that any parent can make the plan happen.
The majority of the book addresses specific problems with specific solutions. About one hundred behaviors and issues are organized alphabetically with quoted examples from parents. Dr. Leman offers a road map for fixing each problem without argument. The issues range from items such as clothing and earrings to complex ills of society that may have invaded the home.
Recommendation: This outstanding guide is sure to improve family relationships. Learning the parenting techniques discussed in Have a New Kid by Friday will help children and teens now and when they become adults. As Dr. Leman stated, the trick is in holding a firm course during implementation, but parents who choose to rise to the challenge will reap big rewards. Their children will be grateful down the road.
