In Do Your Kids a Favor...Love Your Spouse, Kendra Smiley, with the help of her husband, shares some of the wisdom she gained during the first fifteen years of her marriage. She tells how the relationship her husband helped her to find with Christ improved their marriage and defined their roles as parents. Encouraging readers to set their priorities with the Lord at the top, she discusses how different men and women are in their thinking, how the way we were raised establishes our definition of "normal", and how one can turn these differences into assets in a marriage.
The most valuable section of Do Your Kids a Favor...Love Your Spouse is the "Unpacking the Baggage" chapter. Here, Mrs. Smiley discusses the emotional baggage that people harbor from their growing-up years. In her case, the baggage was heavy -- life with an alcoholic parent. Mrs. Smiley is very honest in describing her feelings of anger, and she is equally forthright in saying how the Lord helped her to release these feelings and forgive. She offers a step-by-step plan that will bring healing to many.
Recommendation: This book implies by its title that it is about your children, but in fact, it is about your marriage and your relationship with the Lord. By building a strong marriage with Christ at the center, you can be the role model that your children need for a faith-filled life obedient to God.
Do Your Kids a Favor...Love Your Spouse would be an excellent gift for young married couples. It would also be helpful for couples who are struggling to communicate with one another or would like to move towards a closer and more Godly relationship. Do Your Kids a Favor...Love Your Spouse is a quick and enjoyable read, but has the substance for a lengthy study by couples motivated to improve their marriage.
