Sue Maakestad, retired homeschooling mother of eight, offers encouragement and humor in this book subtitled "A Survivor's Guide to Giving Your Kids a Quality Education." Even though she did not have a high school diploma, Mrs. Maakestad began homeschooling her children from birth and continued till each entered college at about age fifteen.

Mrs. Maakestad covers a wide variety of topics. Using examples from her own experience and that of others, she builds a case for homeschooling by asserting that parents have the authority and ability to homeschool their children. "Homeschooling is an extension of parenting, not a function of credentials." She stresses the importance of a close family and parental involvement with their children.

The author offers special encouragement to parents of children with disabilities. Montessori's education of the whole child is recommended along with avoiding labels and setting time aside to address the specific issue.

Throughout the book Mrs. Maakestad has many tips to succeed. At the end of each chapter, a "Lifesavers" section backs up each suggestion with Scripture. She concludes the book with her e-mail address and phone number for those who would like further encouragement or prayer.

Recommendation: In Home Sweet Home-school Sue Maakestad delivers an uplifting message for new and old homeschoolers. Her amusing and friendly style sets the reader at ease immediately, and her emphasis on faith will touch the hearts of struggling parents who want to homeschool but need more confidence and direction.
