Very First Christmas Advent Calendar

Art by Francisco Ordaz

Review by Martha Robinson

Very First Christmas Advent Calendar. Art by Francisco Ordaz. Calendar approximately 12" square. Available from Concordia Publishing House, $4.99.

The Very First Christmas Advent Calendar has a large picture of Mary and Joseph kneeling over the baby Jesus surrounded by animals in the stable cave. The light from the torch in the corner gives the picture a warm glow. Mary is dressed in white, as is the babe, and very realistic sheep goats, and a donkey look on.

Each day of December, one door on the calendar is to be opened to reveal a small picture and message to "follow the fulfillment of God's promise of a Savior, born on the very first Christmas." Text in the windows includes promises and truths surrounding the prophecy of Christ's birth and the events before and after His arrival.

Recommendation: Advent calendars are a wonderful way to help small children pass the days before Christmas. Unlike many Advent calendars that emphasize candy, Santa Claus, and snow, the Very First Christmas Advent Calendar shows us the true meaning of Christmas -- God's promises fulfilled in the Living Christ.
