NEST Family Entertainment has created an excellent way to teach kids about the heroes of our country while building strong character! The Animated Hero Classics contains many videos, but only two were reviewed: Helen Keller and George Washington.
Each fully-animated DVD is approximately thirty minutes long. Additional features include an Adventure Quiz, and a section that lists the other videos in the series, with a summary of the story and the character-building principle that it teaches. In addition, each story can be viewed in either English or Spanish, with subtitles in either language.
Each video has a corresponding Resource and Activity Book. This workbook is full of fun games, puzzles, and coloring pages relating to the story. The workbook is divided into three levels of difficulty to fit a wider range of ages. An answer key is located in the back of the book, as well as two "Certificates of Achievement" for completing the curriculum. All pages are reproducible.
Helen Keller tells the astounding story of how Helen Keller conquer her disabilities. This charming production begins with Helen's sickness, and continues on through her childhood, to her fights with her teacher, Annie Sullivan, and, finally, to her freedom as she discovers the world around her. Helen Keller's dramatic story is an excellent way to show kids that even the hardest of obstacles can be overcome!
George Washington tells the story of the courageous actions of this famous soldier. This story begins at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, and follows Washington's movements throughout this important war. This exciting biography could easily be used as part of a history class.
Recommendation: The animation and cartoonish characters in these DVD's will be sure to captivate kids' attention! While the workbook appears to be geared towards younger children, its several difficulty levels allow older students to use it as well. In addition, by using the bi-lingual option, parents could use this program as part of language studies. Whether used for school, building character, or just entertainment, kids are sure to love these DVD's.
