Analogies 1 is an introductory text for "problem-solving strategies, exercises for analysis, and vocabulary study." In the "Analogies: How to Solve Them" section, the author uses a question and answer format to get straight to the point. Headings such as "What is an Analogy?", "What is a Bridge Sentence?", and "What Do You Do with Words That Have More Than One Meaning?" are followed by explanations and practice exercises. The "Warm-Up" exercises include both answers and explanations. Part 2 of the book, "Three Hundred Analogies," is grouped in units of twenty and has only answers. The last part of the book has "Three Hundred Vocabulary Words" for use with the analogy section and for general study. Each word includes part of speech and a brief definition. A separate, reproducible test booklet with six analogy and six vocabulary quizzes is available.

Analogies 3 is a "worktext to build skills for the SAT 1 and other standardized tests." It also begins with an "Analogies: How to Solve Them" section, but as the student is expected to have completed the other books in the series, this one moves more quickly without examples and explanations. The "top ten" and "secondary six" types of analogies are enumerated and explained at the end of part 1. Part 2 consists of "four hundred analogies" broken into groups of twenty. The final section is "Four Hundred Vocabulary Words" again for use with the analogies and general study. Answers for the analogies are in the back. A separate, reproducible test booklet with four analogy and eight vocabulary quizzes is available.

Recommendation: The Analogies books are designed to prepare the high school student for taking standardized tests. With thorough but straightforward explanations and many practice problems, the series is sure to be helpful prior to taking the SAT or other test. At about $18 per set (text and test book), some families might find this series a bit expensive.
