Are you feeling "out of the holiday spirit"? Below are listed some ideas for obtaining that precious Christmas cheer, as well as some funny Christmas poems and songs.
I LOVE Christmas and all that it means to me...good smells, beautiful sights, excitement and wonder, joy and HOPE...
As we look back on His first coming, and all of the preparation that went into it, we can begin to prepare our lives for - and look forward to - His second advent. What a joyous thought!
As you decorate, think of ways to bring eternal values alive for your children and for yourself.
My big tree in the front (that everyone who passes by can see):
Make an advent wreath and have your children (with help, of course) light the candles. Let them take turns reading the Christmas story from the Bible or other appropriate verses. Sing some favorite carols.
Keep Christmas music going on the stereo all the time! Instrumental, sacred, and even "fun" (like Deck the Halls, and Rudolph, and Jingle Bells!)
Laurajean says:
Have a "wrapping day." Get out the paper, tape, bows and presents and get busy and wrap those presents. Play Christmas music and serve hot chocolate and cookies, or cheese and crackers or something fun.
Martha R. says:
Have an Advent wreath - My children love having the candles at the table. We have a special prayer for each of the four weeks (hope, peace, joy, love). It really refocuses your celebration for four weeks. Advent wreaths are also easy and very inexpensive to make.
Michelle T. says:
Read and re read The Christmas story in Luke. It amazes me that Jesus left his throne in heaven to be born in a stable and have a feeding trough for his bed. He gave up so much for us. He lived a life rejected, laughed at, homeless ..... just for us. He could have called it off any time, or could have been born in opulence, but chose a humble beginning instead. Much more humble than many of our circumstances. This is what I try to impart on our family.
Pete S. says:
Christmas was a special time when I grew up. Along with the trees, presents, and cookies, it was an annual reminder of the wonderful gift that came to mankind when Jesus was born. And though Christmas was accompanied by the presents and such, Jesus was the focus of our Christmas, its heart and motivation.
Fast-forwarding to today, the Christmas our culture "celebrates" has almost been sterilized of Christ. Think of the songs you'll hear on the radio - celebrating snow, bells, a fire in the fireplace, being home for Christmas, celebration, and Christmas itself. In decorations, you'll see bells, holly, garland, and Santa Clauses. But the reason for celebrating Christmas, its heart, is missing. The things the songs extol each have their beauty, but the reason for celebrating Christmas has been reduced to a our-culture-has-always-done-it.
I'm confident that in the homes of those who have been patient enough to read this far, Jesus is not missing, but is the center of Christmas celebration. And many of you attend churches where this is also the case. This is well and good for us, but our culture, our nation's people, need to hear once again that Jesus is the motivation for our celebration, and that amid the commercialized giving of gifts, the buying and selling, that the ultimate gift to mankind is Jesus, who lived that we might receive salvation - the gift of eternal life.
Homeschool Mom's Night Before Christmas
'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the home,
Children were still studying for their test on Rome.
Mom was planning, she had just an hour,
To teach 'one more lesson' before their night shower.
A whole week of vacation, the children were thrilled,
But Mom saw the lesson plans, and the blocks were still filled.
"Can I stop for a day, much less a whole week?"
Just the thought of time off, made me shudder and shriek!
Would they remember anything, would they fall behind?
"Lord, I need your help, just give me a sign!!!"
Then out on the sidewalk, I saw my four boys,
And I heard them say, "it's not about toys."
To the neighborhood kids, they explained Jesus' birth,
And how through Jesus, not toys, we gain our worth.
At that point, math and spelling and learning to write,
Meant little to me as I had lost the sight
Of what teaching at home was truly about.
Then I sat at my desk and began to pout.
The pouts turned to sobs, "Lord what have I done?
It's not about grades, but to follow your Son!"
"Please guide me and show me my job is to teach,
And turn them to you, and of Jesus I'll preach."
Now we'll put away books and not open them 'til later,
We'll focus on Jesus, our Lord and Creator.
It's His day and so we will all celebrate,
I'll never mention the words "behind" or "we're late".
So, Thank You, Lord, for blessing me,
With such a great husband and family.
Now homeschooling moms, TURN OUT THE SCHOOL LIGHT!

The 14 Days of Homeschooling (sung to the tune of "The 12 Day of Christmas")

On the sixth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "How long will you homeschool, YOU ARE S0 STRANGE, what about P.E. , do you give them tests,
are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"
On the seventh day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Look at what they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE!, what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, do you homeschool legally?"
On the eighth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Why do you do this, look at what they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E. do you give them tests, are they socialized, do you homeschool legally?"

On the twelfth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Can they go to college, I could never do that, what about graduation, they'll miss the prom, why do you do this, look at what they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, What about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"
On the thirteenth day of homeschool I thoughtfully replied: "They can go to college, yes you can do this, they can have graduation, we don't like the prom, we do it because we like it, they are missing nothing, we'll homeschool forever, WE ARE NOT STRANGE!, We give them P.E., and we give them tests, they are socialized, AND WE HOMESCHOOL LEGALLY!
On the fourteenth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "How can I get started, why didn't you tell me, where do I buy curriculum, when is the next conference, WILL PEOPLE THINK WE'RE STRANGE? I think we can do this, if you will help us, we'll join a sports team, and we'll homeschool legally!
1 Corinthians 13 - The Christmas Version
If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator.
If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook.
If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me
nothing.
If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend myriad holiday parties, and sing in the choir's cantata, but do
not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.
Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas chinaand table linens.
Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.
Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can't.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. Video games will break; pearl necklaces will be lost; golf clubs will rust;
but giving the gift of love will endure forever.
