Quilting and Machine Embroidery

An Interview with Allie H.

How did you get started?

Years ago, I saw a picture of a quilt that I fell in love with. The only person I knew who sewed didn't make quilts, so I determined I'd make my own. It took me 20 years, and I made every mistake you can on that quilt, but it turned out wonderfully and got me hooked. The first time I slept under it was magical.

What materials and costs are involved?

Quilting is not a frugal hobby. Fabric alone costs a lot. You also need a sewing machine, rotary cutter and mat, rulers, threads, and of course you soon get hooked on quilt books and magazines. Machine embroidery is terribly expensive. A a good embroidery machine, specialty threads, stabilizers, software, and embroidery designs add up fast. You CAN start quilting, by hand like I did, purchasing cheaper fabrics, but you won't stay satisfied with that.

How does it bless you or others?

It blesses me by keeping me sane. I have a need to create and a love of textiles. I'm able to bless others by making things for them that they couldn't buy, and I'm able to put my prayers for them into everything I make. With my embroidery, I'm hoping to make a living by creating designs for others to buy and stitch.
