Trail Riding and Horse Camping

An interview with Kysa Gilkerson

How did you get started? Mmmm, my grandfather had me on horses by the age of 18 months. My father bought me my first horse at age 10, and I have had at least one horse except for the years of college and young married.

I started again when my daughter was 7 and I bought her a pony. Now I bought a pony for my granddaughter, and she should be able to ride it in the 3 or 4 years!

What materials and costs are involved? A horse, but it can be borrowed! I loan mine out all the time. A 10 year old neighbor girl is leasing (free - She just has to do the care.) one of my horses for the summer. Horses can be expensive or cheap, but the upkeep is a bit expensive. I have my own pasture and make my own hay. It still costs about $500/year per horse for vaccines, feed supplements and hoof trimming.

How does it bless you or others? Horses are my SANITY, but I do share this with others. My best friend keeps her two horses on my property for free, and then I have a riding partner. I share my horses with friends and family, and often pick up nieces and take them with horse camping. I do ride alone, but not often.
