Discover Your Child's Learning Style is a positive, uplifting book that asserts that every child is "smart" in his own way. The authors, educators with many years of experience, have all parents in mind as the intended audience, but the contents will be particularly helpful for parents of traditional classroom students and newer or struggling homeschoolers.
In the introduction, the authors tell us that "Parents are the most important teachers in a child's life." They urge parents to take back the responsibility for teaching their children. Mrs. Willis and Mrs. Hodson encourage parents of children in classroom and homeschooling situations to find their children's hidden potential by examining multiple intelligences, searching for the child's strengths, and then building upon those to achieve success.

The C.A.R.E.S. chapter in Part 1 gives basic guidelines for the parent to use as he begins the process of redefining his parental responsibilities. A child's individual characteristics should be celebrated. The parent must accept primary responsibility for the child's education and must proactively respond to the child's needs. The learning environment must be expanded beyond the traditional classroom and should include games and family time. Parents must stop accepting the viewpoint that some children are not as smart as, or cannot succeed as well as, other children. Part 2 offers tools for evaluating your child's learning style. An assessment for readers of all ages and another for preschoolers are included along with specific instructions for their administration. |
Part 3 discusses how to use what you have learned about your child from the assessment. Techniques for interacting with your child, strategies for learning disabilities, and suggestions for cooperating with the classroom teacher are included. The section concludes with a motivational and thought-provoking discussion on how you can impact your child's entire future through the educational efforts of today.
Martha's Recommendation: Discover Your Child's Learning Style is sure to expand your thoughts on the techniques to use with your child. While focused more on the classroom-taught child, this book offers valuable information for the homeschooling parent, especially those who are struggling with one or more of their children. The assessment is easy to administer and is available in the book or on-line at A Self-Portrait On-line. If you are wondering why your child is not reaching your expectations or if you would like to be able to work better with your child, Discover Your Child's Learning Style is a must-read!
Mary Leggewie's Recommendation: This is a great book for an introduction to learning styles! With extensive footnotes and bibliography, you will have no problem finding resources to expand your knowledge on the subject with further reading.
