Dear
Abby's Serviceman project, exerpted from the Fort Worth
Star-Telegram.
Many veterans can
remember those sad holidays when they had to stand in formation
at mail call and then walk away empty-handed while their buddies
lost themselves in the treasured bounty of letters and packages
from home.
You can help ease
that sadness by sending letters and cards to servicemen and
women at their posts all over the world.
You don't even have
to know their names, thanks to newspaper columnist Abigail Van
Buren, whose "Dear Abby" column.
Van Buren's project
is called "Dear Abby 2000" and for the past 16 years,
she has urged Americans to send holiday mail to overseas servicemen
and women.
To participate in
Dear Abby 2000, send your first-class letter of up to 13 ounces
to: Any Service Member, APO AE 09135 for those serving in Europe
and Southwest Asia; FPO AE 09646 for those in the Mediterranean
Basin; FPO AP 96285 for the Far East; and FPO AP 96385 for those
on duty in the Pacific Basin.
"APO" and
"FPO" are military abbreviations for Army Post Office
and Fleet Post Office.
